Vision 2020: Bearing Witness and Looking Forward, www.2020visionproject.us,  is a project designed to put student’s voices first! In this project, students in the eighth to twelfth grades will work with their teacher to create short original dramatic works that take the form of scenes and monologues that express their ideas, thoughts and feelings in response to the pandemics and ensuing events of 2020. Although the works may address specific events and experiences, it is our hope that they will provide a window for young people in the future to view these remarkable times.

Theatre is a collaborative art form and dramatic works can be created in many ways, however, they all have at heart a process of development. When circumstances allow, you can guide your students through this process using Devising, Improvisation, or Traditional Play-Writing Techniques with Readings and Editing. Students can still create original theatre pieces working individually or in collaboration online. Virtual readings and brainstorming sessions could be done through Zoom or GoogleMeets.

From these pieces that your students create, please choose five to become part of the Vision 2020: Bearing Witness and Looking Forward collection, www.2020visionproject.us. We will compile these in an electronic format making them accessible to any middle or high school or organization working with students of that age, to rehearse and perform free of charge. Any director choosing plays from this collection will present the plays as written and credit the project, school/teacher, and student writer. All dramatic works should be relevant to the times we are collectively and individually experiencing, and be appropriate for production in your school or community with regards to subject matter and language. Go to www.2020visionproject.us to get further details.

Thank you for taking the time to consider being part of this project. Your time is valuable and we appreciate what you do with students every day. We recognize that you are going through challenging circumstances as well, and hope this project can be part of your curriculum by allowing students to explore all four artistic processes, while creating work that speaks both by and for our students!
