This beginner-friendly workshop will explore the rich tradition of storytelling through song and provide hands-on experience in crafting your own ballad.\n\n\nWhat is a Ballad? Learn about the essential characteristics of traditional ballads—their narrative structure\, musical qualities\, and role in preserving community stories and cultural memory. William will share examples from the Appalachian tradition and discuss how ballads have served as vessels for history\, emotion\, and shared experience.\n\n\nWorkshop Elements:\n– Understanding ballad structure: verses\, refrains\, and narrative arc\n– Exploring traditional themes: love\, loss\, heroism\, and everyday life\n– Finding your own story to tell through song\n– Group exercises in collaborative ballad creation\n\n\nHands-On Learning: Participants will work individually and in small groups to begin crafting their own ballads\, with guidance from William on developing compelling narratives\, creating effective rhyme schemes\, and finding the emotional heart of their stories. No previous songwriting experience necessary—just bring your curiosity and willingness to explore this timeless art form.\n\n\nBio:\n\n\nWilliam Ritter is a seasoned old-time fiddler\, seed-saver\, and ballad singer from the mountains of Mitchell County\, North Carolina. Deeply passionate about preserving and sharing the rich cultural heritage of his region\, William weaves together stories\, songs\, and seeds\, believing that these old ways hold the key to building resilient communities. His dedication to Appalachian traditions led him to a life-changing apprenticeship with renowned ballad singer and storyteller Bobby McMillon in 2020\, and the following year he released his first solo album\, Mentor\, paying tribute to the mentors who generously shared their wisdom and heritage with him. William performs regularly alongside Sheila Kay Adams\, Donna Ray Norton and other members of the ballad singing collective\, Nest of Singing Birds.\n\n\nWilliam’s music is a heartfelt blend of old-time fiddle tunes\, folk songs\, ballads\, and original compositions that celebrate seed-saving and cultural preservation. His performances and programs are enriched by tales and insights from his studies in Appalachian Roots Music and his experiences during porch visits\, bean-stringings\, and seed-swaps. He shares his passion for traditional music and foodways through performing\, teaching\, and writing\, continuing the vital work of cultural preservation for future generations.\n\n\nAll Tickets: Free\nFor adults and children ages 4 and up.
