SUMMARY:History of Film
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Reed\, Associate Professor of Film and Media Arts at the University of Pikeville\, will present an overview of the history of film. From Muybridge to the multiplex and beyond\, this presentation will showcase the history and future of cinema. We will look at the history of film in America\, and how international film movements made an impact on American filmmaking. Special attention will also be given to the impact of COVID-19 on the film industry and how we have now entered a new era of film distribution.\nReed is currently serving his 7th year at UPIKE and has been making films for over 15 years. He has directed 2 feature-length films\, numerous short films\, and has had approximately 60 film screenings at academic conferences and film festivals around the world as far away as Pakistan. DESCRIPTION:Years after you’re gone\, a grandchild might have a scrapbook or a box of photos with names written on the back of a few\, but will any of those tell your story? Will anyone know your thoughts\, the lessons you’ve learned\, what was important to you or what you were proud of? Presenter Bob Thompson has had a long career writing and telling personal stories for his long-running (20 year) NPR radio show\, Kentucky Homefront\, in his books\, Hitchhiker: Stories from the Kentucky Homefront and Stitched Together: Stories of a Kentucky Life\, and on stage as a professional storyteller. SUMMARY:Fiddling From the Hills
DESCRIPTION:Fiddle music in America is as varied as its people. Every geographical area had tunes and styles that were unique to them\, oftentimes based on those locales’ immigrant influences. The same is true of Kentucky fiddling. There are many traditional styles throughout the state. This presentation will focus on the unique and diverse fiddle styles of eastern Kentucky and some of its most noted old-time fiddlers.
